Vulfpeck Releases Silent Album on Spotify to Fund Tour

This may take the ‘fucking with the system’ idea to a completely new level – Michigan-based funk band Vulfpeck has vulfpeck-sleepify-smallreleased an album of absolute silence through Spotify, and hoping that its streaming royalties will fund their forthcoming tour.

Titled Sleepify, the 10-track album features songs between 0:31-0:32 in length, and are appropriately titled “Z” through “Zzzzzzzzzz.” For those who don’t know, musicians only get Spotify royalties for a song if it is played for at least 30 seconds.

In a promotional video for the endeavour, band frontman Jack Stratton explains that every time someone streams one of their songs, Vulfpeck will earn half a cent in royalties. He argues that if a person chooses to stream the album for the entire time they’re asleep, that individual can earn the group a cool $4.

Stratton adds that they’ll pay close attention to the regions that are most embracing Sleepify, on Spotify, and route their tour accordingly.

What’s the ultimate motivation here?

Of course, one has to think this is a pure publicity stunt in which many publications, including Riffyou.com, are more than willing to take part in. Also, the group hopes to raise enough money through this strategy so that all shows on said tour will be free to all attendees.

Here’s hoping the shows aren’t silent. That would be awkward.
