R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe Inducting Nirvana into Hall of Fame
It has been confirmed that R.E.M.’s Michael Stipe will induct Nirvana into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on April 10. Stipe had befriended fallen Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain leading up to his death, and was even appointed the godfather of his daughter Frances Bean.
In a 2011 Interview Magazine article, Stipe recalled a failed attempt in 1994 to get the frontman to fly out of Seattle and collaborate with him.
“I was doing that to try to save his life,” said Stipe. “The collaboration was me calling up as an excuse to reach out to this guy. He was in a really bad place.”
He added: “I constructed a project to try to snap Kurt out of a frame of mind. I sent him a plane ticket and a driver, and he tacked the plane ticket to the wall in the bedroom and the driver sat outside the house for 10 hours. Kurt wouldn’t come out and wouldn’t answer the phone.”
Stype also noted that the collaboration wasn’t meant for an album.
As for the other inductions, Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello will induct Kiss; Bruce Springsteen will welcome in the E Street Band; Coldplay’s Chris Martin will honour Peter Gabriel; and The Roots’ Questlove will pay tribute to Hall & Oates.
