On the Pot: Mayor Ford Declares Today ‘Bob Marley Day’ in Toronto

bob-marley-rob-ford-smallPersonal drug scandal be damned, Toronto Mayor Rob Ford has proclaimed February 6 ‘Bob Marley Day’ within the city he oversees. Today would have been the reggae legend’s 69th birthday.

While Marley was a highly-influential artist, he also remains one of marijuana’s main poster boys. Considering that within the past year, Mayor Ford has admitted to smoking crack cocaine while in one of his “drunken stupors;” having used “a lot” of pot in his life; and been caught on film numerous times while publically intoxicated, maybe he could’ve just sent the Marley family a card? Chances are they would’ve appreciated that.

Instead, Ford’s given the joke-makers more material to play with.

That said, the Mayor did dance to “One Love” in December during a City Council meeting, and recently spoke in an awful Jamaican accent at a fast food place, so it appears that his love for Marley and the Jamaican culture is prevalent.

Anyways, here’s the Mayor’s entire proclamation:

WHEREAS each year on February 6, we honour the legacy of Robert (Bob) Nesta Marley, an influential musician, advocate for human rights and international ambassador of peace.

His early career began with friends, the legendary Wailers, “Bob Marley and the Wailers.” His music captivated people of all cultures, broke music barriers and helped introduce reggae music to the world.

Bob Marley became one of the greatest ambassadors of peace the world has seen. He used music to tear down the walls of apartheid and promoted African unity, culture and world peace both at home and internationally, with songs like “One Love” and “Africa Unite.” Today, his music continues to be loved by many and is instantly recognized around the world.

NOW THEREFORE, I, Mayor Rob Ford, on behalf of Toronto City Council, do hereby proclaim February 6, 2014 as “Bob Marley Day” in the City of Toronto.
