In today’s Getting to Know, we meet Charlie, Monster! a Winnipeg-based pop-punk band that likes to maintain an edge. If you are in an up and coming band that would like to partake in a Getting to Know feature, contact editor@riffyou.com to receive the questionnaire and instructions. Thanks!
Band Name: Charlie, Monster!
Band Members: Tye (vocals, guitar), Eric Lavallee (lead guitar), Will (bass), and Franky (drums).
Years Active: 1.5
City of Origin: Winnipeg, MB.
Who are you and what do you do?
“I’m Tye and I sing lead vocals and rock the guitar!”
In 100 words or less, tell us how your band has gotten to this point.
“Hard work. It’s been years of practicing, recording and playing shows. After 10 years of playing with various bands, I’m finally starting to feel the love. Support your local scene!”
What is your latest release and how would you best describe it to someone who hasn’t heard your band?
“We’ve released an EP called The Voice That Suits Us All. It’s pop-punk that has a soft and sweet sound, but still maintains an edge.”
When making an album, which aspect of the process do you put the most time into and why?
“I think all aspects are treated pretty equally.”
What is the best part about your band and why?
“Definitely our edgy style. And, we love hanging with new friends at shows and having a good time.”
What makes your band unique from the rest?
“We’re not afraid of taking risks and doing things that wouldn’t necessarily be expected from a pop-punk band.”
How does your band survive the challenges of touring/gigging?
“We have a commitment to our music and that means we’re willing to do anything to make it happen. You got to be all in…otherwise you’re not in.”
Would you rather be critically-acclaimed; rich and famous; or an under-the-radar band with a dedicated fan base?
“I think having a dedicated fan base is better than a million dollars any day of the week.”
If you’d have to compare your band to another one out there, living or dead, who would it be and why?
“I don’t think there is a band I could compare ourselves too. A lot of our songs have different sounds and styles.”
Which band/musician would you like to share many drinks with? What would you talk about?
“Billie Joe Armstrong. We would talk about Les Paul Juniors with him. [They’re] beautiful guitars.”
