In today’s Getting to Know we meet East London rock trio, The Everglows, a band that prides itself on having the same tongue-in-cheek attitude as The Kinks. If you are in an up and coming band that would like to partake in a Getting to Know feature, contact editor@riffyou.com to receive the questionnaire and instructions. Thanks!

Who are you and what do you do?

“I am Andy Smith the singer, guitarist, songwriter, promoter, tea maker and general dogsbody!”

In 100 words or less, tell us how your band has gotten to this point.

“We came together to create the kind of music we all like to listen to, mixing influences from Mod, ‘60s, new wave and garage. This powerful three piece packs a mean punch!”

What is your latest release and how would you best describe it to someone who hasn’t heard your band?
“Our latest release is ‘Tatty Little Love Song’ and it’s a power-driven song about a drunken argument. It’s kind of a cross between The Jam and Elvis Costello.”

What is the best part about your band and why?
“The best part of our band is playing live, followed by recording material.”

What makes your band unique from the rest?
“We think our band stands out because of the songs. We’ve always tried to create catchy melody-lead songs that stick in your head.”

How does your band survive the challenges of touring/gigging?
“Touring? Not there yet! As far as gigs go, we tend to drink quite a lot to pass the time.”

Would you rather be critically-acclaimed; rich and famous; or an under-the-radar band with a dedicated fan base?
“I think I personally would like to be critically-acclaimed, but I wouldn’t mind if that led me to being rich! Fame’s not why we’re into music, otherwise we’d be on The X Factor or a crap show like that.”

If you’d have to compare your band to another one out there, living or dead, who would it be and why?
“I think you’d compare us to The Kinks, but our sound isn’t one you can pin down to one band. I say The Kinks because they always had a firm tongue-in-cheek to everything they did and we’re a bit like that. We don’t take ourselves too seriously!”

Which band/musician would you like to share many drinks with? What would you talk about?
“Ray would definitely say Sid Barrett and Steve would probably say Keith Moon or Ozzy Osbourne. I’d go for Paul McCartney – the guy’s a legend and I’d finally find out if he really did sleep with Yoko before John did!”
