Tom DeLonge has not been an official member of Blink-182 for over a year, but that hasn’t stopped the band from moving forward with Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba. In fact, a new album for the trio was recently completed and is just awaiting a release date. Surely, many are excited, skeptical or blasé regarding what shape said album will take.

In new interview with Kerrang!, John Feldmann the producer of this yet-to-be-titled Blink-182 album, expressed his enthusiasm about it: “It sounds fucking great and I’m just so excited to have people hear it. I’d say it’s one of the best records I’ve ever made in my life.”

While he’s entitled to that opinion, the weirder one is what he said with regard to the impact DeLonge’s departure has had on his past Blink-182 band members, Mark Hoppus and Travis Barker.

Said Feldmann: “When it comes to recording with Matt I was thinking about what the closest parallel might be in musical terms, and I guess it would be like replacing Paul McCartney or John Lennon in The Beatles.”

“Tom and Mark really were a pair of lead singers,” continued Feldmann, “but Mark sings a lot of people’s favourite songs!”

As for the direction of this forthcoming Blink-182 album, Feldmann hinted at a more mature sound from the band.

“The guys aren’t 23 any more, they’re dads now, so they’re no longer writing songs about poo and that kind of stuff,” offered Feldmann. “But there’s still got to be a sense of humour to it; it’s got to be fun and funny, but also age appropriate. There’s got to be growth on the album and there is.”
