Why the Will Ferrell vs. RHCP Drum Off Could be Great

In a recent Reddit ‘Ask Me Anything’ conversation, actor Will Ferrell accepted the challenge of Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer (and Ferrell doppelganger), Chad Smith to participate in a drum off. Smith is a professional, while Ferrell has been known for his cowbell appreciation.

For years, many have been frightened by the uncanny resemblance of these fellas, which last week led to Ferrell jokingly calling out Smith in a video. Smith subsequently replied with the drum off challenge.

“Hi, Chad. Will Ferrell here. I saw your video and I graciously accept your invitation to a drum battle,” read the response by the Anchorman actor in a separate Reddit session hosted by Smith. “If we can raise $300,000 for Cancer For College I will face off with you in the greatest drum vs. cowbell showdown the world has ever seen. We can do it on stage at a Red Hot Chili Peppers concert or in front of a mutually convenient public library. Your call. Also, would you rather fight a hundred duck sized ducks or one horse sized horse?”

Smith soon retorted: “I have to comment that I think Mr. Ferrell is a delusional imposter. It seems to me that he has gone off his meds and he needs to seek professional help because I am obviously more talented and handsome than he is. You know, his cowbell work is well-documented, but his drumset skills are nominal based on Step Brothers the film. Other than wiping his testicles on the drums, which of course I give high marks to.”

While it is unclear how soon this event could come together, or if Ferrell will abandon his cowbell for an actual drum off, Riffyou.com believes this will be great for a number of reasons:

Will Ferrell learning drums: If Ferrell were to learn drums, just imagine what kinds of opportunities this would open him up to. Perhaps he will take those new skills and put them to use in an ‘80s hair band film trilogy that pits Ferrell’s character up against a rival drummer that continuously out hairsprays; out drum-solos; and out leotards him every step of the way. I’d see that.

Smith and Ferrell side-by-side at last: Because of their resemblance, I’ve wanted to see these two men next to each other – in a scenario like this – for years. While I fear my brain exploding, I’d take the chance if it meant realizing a dream.

The chance that Smith and Ferrell record together: Ferrell hasn’t made a comedy album, nor has Smith (unless you count Stadium Arcadium), but perhaps this path of smack talk will end up with the two putting forth the instant classic, Smith & Ferrell: Red Hot Burgundy.
