Weekend Roundup: Death Cab Member Marches On, U2 Defends
The Weekend Roundup takes a look at some of the important, interesting, cool, or funny happenings that occurred, well, over the weekend. If you have any tips or suggestions, feel free to contact us at editor@riffyou.com.
Death Cab member marches on
On Saturday at this weekend’s Rifflandia Festival in Victoria, BC, Death Cab for Cutie played their final show with founding guitarist Chris Walla, who recently announced that he’d be departing the band after 17 years. Walla’s last song proved to be the always-beautiful “Marching Bands of Manhattan.” You can watch the farewell here:
A royal reception
Rock royalty met real royalty last night in the UK as Foo Fighters were welcomed on stage for their Invictus Games Closing Ceremony performance by Prince Harry. After being embraced by the Prince following the band’s entrance to the stage, frontman Dave Grohl informed the crowd how the youngest son of Charles had personally called him and invited the Foos to perform. As Grohl and the guys blasted through an 11-song greatest hits set, the Prince could be seen watching from the crowd.
U2’s gifted album gets defended
Ever since U2 surprised the world last week by releasing their long-awaited new album – Songs of Innocence – for free to all iTunes customers, much online backlash has been experienced. In a new interview with Mashable, the band’s manager Guy Oseary has responded: “It’s a gift from Apple. If someone doesn’t like the gift, they should delete it. … There are people who are going to be thrilled to get a gift. There are people who are not going to care to have this gift. We knew all of that going in. No surprises here. If someone doesn’t like it, then great, that’s OK, delete it. … We just want to share it with as many people as possible. If you don’t want it and you don’t need it, delete it.” If you’re one of those people who’d like to delete it, instructions on how to do so have been published.
Winehouse erected
On Saturday at the Stables Market in Camden, England, a life-size statue of Amy Winehouse was erected on what would’ve been the Grammy Award-winning singer’s 31st birthday. Her father Mitch – who was on-hand for the unveiling – told BBC News that although there is more Winehouse music in the vault, we shouldn’t expect to hear it…ever: “We’re not about to put out new albums with different takes on ‘Back To Black’. She probably did 15 different versions of ‘Back To Black’ but we would’nt do that, it’s not fair. We don’t want to rip people off. There is no more new music.”
Primus cover Tool, with Tool drummer
As Primus drummer Tim Alexander continues to recover from heart surgery, Tool drummer Danny Carey has filled in on the skins as the band plays a short run of dates across the US. This weekend at the Chicago edition of Riot Fest, Primus brought a little more Tool into their set with a cover of “Ænema.” Watch that here:
