UnCut Audio: Papa Roach Talk “Last Resort” 15 Years Later
It’s hard to believe that it was 15 years ago that California hard rockers, Papa Roach, exploded into the mainstream with “Last Resort,” a song that was hugely misconstrued at the time as a suicide anthem, when really it was anything but.
Regardless, the song would feature prominently on radio and TV as the band released their major label debut, Infest, in 2000. However, what many heard on those formats were severely edited versions of that song. Beyond the typical vulgarity that would usually gets the axe from public airwaves, words like “cut” and “bleeding” were excluded, as was the singing of the title, “Last Resort.”
Even though it was sliced and diced for out-of-the-home-consumption, the song helped Papa Roach move a couple million copies of Infest and sustain themselves as a force on the hard rock circuit.
As the band prepares to release their eighth studio album, F.E.A.R. (on January 27), Riffyou.com spent some time with Papa Roach guitarist Jerry Horton to discuss what he thought about the censoring of “Last Resort,” why they continue to play the song, and the importance of not letting that track dictate their legacy.
