In 2014, Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley almost died. After years of alcohol abuse, his sum-41-2015kidneys and liver collapsed, putting the pop-punk favourite under heavy medical sedation for a week. After coming to, he realized that it was time to clean up his act.

Now after months of rumblings about a Sum 41 return, things have been made official has the band has created a PledgeMusic campaign to help fund the creation of its next album.

“Words can’t describe how good it feels to be back, so I’ll just let the music do that instead,” reads a statement upon Sum 41’s campaign page. “It’s been a crazy few years for all of us in one way or another, but with this much needed break and a new lease on life Sum 41 is back and stronger and more excited than we have been in a long time. It’s time to make a fucking great record!”

Those who donate to the cause can receive anything from a digital download or physical copy of the album, to multi-item prize packs, autographs and even personal encounters with Whibley like a 15-minute phone call, guitar lesson, or a visit to the band’s Los Angeles studio (travel cost not included.)

Sum 41 last released Screaming Bloody Murder in 2011.
