Social Distortion Targeting 2016 for New Album
It’s been over four years since Social Distortion gave us the Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes album, but it appears that the new music drought may soon be coming to an end.
In an interview with Rolling Stone, Social Distortion leader Mike Ness confirmed that he is in the process of writing new material and that his band’s next album could be out in 2016.
“I’ve written a lot of songs, and I’ve got a lot of songs for another solo record,” offered Ness. “Once the summer tour is done, I can start figuring out the direction for the next record. It’s not as far along as I’d like it to be. Unfortunately, for us to do a new record, we have to stop touring because it’s pretty hard for me to write on the road.”
He continued: “We’re banking on 2016. It’s funny because I have the songs in my head but then I forget about them, and a couple came to mind the other day in rehearsal. These were songs I thought might be like filler songs. I showed them to the band, and they were just like, ‘Dude, that song’s fucking awesome, man.’ So that made me think, ‘Maybe I’m further along than I realized.’ So that was cool.”
During an interview with Riffyou.com in 2014, Ness gave us some insight into his song writing approach:
“I have realized the importance of fiction versus non-fiction…as well as writing about positive things, not just negatives. [Even] writing songs that aren’t so serious. I played with that on the last record (Hard Times and Nursery Rhymes, 2011), where I thought, ‘I don’t want to write a bunch of autobiographical shit.’ So, I started writing ‘Gimme the Sweet and Lowdown,’ [and realized] that once I’m able to step out of the picture, it’s still autobiographical, but I was able to write it in the third-person and use character writing. It was so much fun and revealing to me, [how it feels] to have just a little more fun with the writing. It’s more freeing, and that was a good lesson for me.”
