Rivers Cuomo’s Dad Performs with Weezer
On Saturday night at the Burgerama festival in Los Angeles, Weezer was joined on stage by a very unlikely individual: the father of frontman Rivers Cuomo.
“Ladies and gentlemen, for the first time in the history of the universe please give a welcome to the Weezer stage my dad, Frank Cuomo,” said the thick-framed glasses Weezer leader during the introduction.
With Frank on percussion, Weezer performed “Back to the Shack” from 2014’s Everything Will be Alright in the End. During the track, Rivers would change the lyrics, “Maybe I should play the lead guitar and Pat should play the drums” in the song to “Maybe I should play the lead guitar and my dad should play the drums.”
Considering the strip Rivers tore off of Frank in the 1994 Weezer hit “Say it Ain’t So,” this type of instance may prove quite stunning to some. However – with regards to his father – Rivers told Rolling Stone in September, “Now I see him all the time. Now that I’m a father, I have forgiven my parents.”
As for why Frank was targeted in “Say it Ain’t So”: “I was an angry young man,” explained Rivers. “Typical Generation X. I was quick to point the finger.”
You can watch the entire Weezer Burgerama set below. Frank’s appearance occurs around the 30-minute mark.
