Quick Track Review: The Black Clouds – “Photograph”
For many rock fans in the know, word that an album is being made at Studio 606 in California, can lead to suspicion that Foo Fighters are up to something new. Yes, that’s the studio owned and operated by Dave Grohl and company, but its doors are also open to rock acts like New Jersey’s The Black Clouds.
Featuring Dan Matthews (vocals, guitar), Neil Hayes (guitar, vocals), Gary Moses (bass, vocals), and Cory King (drums, vocals), The Black Clouds are hard at work on the follow up to 2012’s in-your-face offering, Better Days, but have provided an early snippet of what’s going on behind closed doors.
On “Photograph,” The Black Clouds chug along with a relentless hard rock energy that rides tight along the rails built by classic guitar-driven rock. At the same time, however, the song effortlessly drops into a chorus that isn’t terribly dissimilar to something that Foo Fighters may have once put onto tape.
While “Photograph” is thick around the edges with the type of riff-age that may burn the ears of the unsuspecting, the track moves at a blistering pace. At barely 2:30, you won’t know what hit you – but chances are you’ll like it.
“Photograph” will appear on After All, the forthcoming, Jack Endino-produced album from The Black Clouds.
