The music world has been gutted once again today as it’s been confirmed that rock, pop, funk and everything-in-between icon, Prince, has passed away at the age of 57. The news was confirmed by Prince’s publicist, Yvette Noel-Schure, via The Associated Press: “It is with profound sadness that I am confirming that the legendary, iconic performer, Prince Rogers Nelson, has died at his Paisley Park residence this morning at the age of 57.”

Earlier today, a medical emergency at Prince’s Minnesota-based Paisley Park estate was reported. Last week, Prince’s private jet made an emergency landing, which led to the musician being hospitalized for the flu.

As controversial and sometimes bizarre as Prince had been throughout his career, the body of work he leaves behind is monumental. Being responsible for such incredible hits as “Purple Rain,” “When Doves Cry,” “Raspberry Beret,” “1999,” “Kiss” and Sinead O’Connor’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” is no small feat. Those songs, and countless others, made Prince one of the greatest songwriters and performers of his generation.

What’s more, his rebellious side was equally worth saluting. He changed his name to a symbol to breakaway from music industry constraints; railed against streaming and sharing his work on forums like YouTube; and recently  opted to sporadically announce tour dates, giving fans and ticket buyers limited notice regarding where he would be playing next. He was a true rock n’ roll rebel.
