New Metallica Album Just 30% Done

It’s been about seven years since Metallica gave us Death Magnetic, but it doesn’t appear that the metallica-band-photoband is in a giant hurry to put out its next album.

In an interview with Billboard, guitarist Kirk Hammett explained that Metallica has a lot of songs in the works, including “two or three hundred riffs” to sift through. Unfortunately, this means that a new album is barely one-third of the way done.

“We have a lot of good songs. The songs are ever-changing at this point. Nothing is etched in stone. We still have a lot of material to sift through, still,” offered Hammett to Billboard. “We have well over a dozen songs and we still have well over two or three hundred riffs, too, so it’s hard to say at what point we actually are in in the project. I don’t think we hit the middle point yet. I would say we’re at the 25 percent point, maybe 30 percent point. It’s hard to say, but I mean we are working on it and there are songs and we’re making plans to write more songs and record.”

Metallica is still keeping busy, however. In addition to headlining Lollapalooza this summer, the band will release its 1982 demo tape, No Life ‘Til Leather cassette on Record Store Day (April 18.) Six of the cassette’s seven tracks appeared on the debut Metallica album, Kill ‘Em All, in 1983.
