Metallica Support Killing Bears, Glastonbury Fans Don’t

Metallica isn’t immune to music audience ire: they’ve been hated for becoming too commercial, for cutting their hair, for railing against anti-metallicaNapster, or for just being Metallica.

However, over the past few weeks, the band has received a lot of backlash over being asked to headline Glastonbury’s Pyramid Stage of the festival’s Saturday night. Johnny Marr, Arctic Monkeys, and even Mogwai have questioned Metallica’s presence at a festival not generally geared toward that brand of heavy music.

Now, it appears frontman James Hetfield’s involvement with History Channel series, The Hunt, has only added fuel to the fire.

The Hunt is an eight-part series documenting (legal and regulated) bear hunting in Alaska, with Hetfield acting as its narrator.

In protest, a Facebook page titled “Remove Metallica from Glastonbury Festival for their Support of Bear Hunting” has begun to build momentum. Since launching on May 25, more than 15,000 folks (at press time) have pledged their support.

“Metallica’s lead singer James Hetfield is a big game hunter and promoter. This is incompatible with Glastonbury Festivals ideals,” reads a section of the page’s About section.

For the record, Hetfield is an admitted member of the National Rifle Association (NRA).

Glastonbury organizers have yet to comment publicly on this movement, or indicate if it’ll have any bearing on Metallica’s headlining slot. Riffyou.com doubts that it will.
