Metallica Guitarist Loses iPhone & 250 Riffs
There are a lot of ways in which technology can help musicians these days, but Kirk Hammett of Metallica has proved that technology can sometimes turn the tables and leave you out in the cold.
During an interview on The Jasta Show podcast, the guitarist explained that he recently lost an iPhone that held a ton of audio ideas he had for the forthcoming Metallica album.
He explained: “I lost my iPhone with 250 musical ideas – and I was crushed. It didn’t get backed up. When it happened, I was bummed out for about two or three days. I’m still looking for it to this day. It still might turn up, I’m hoping that it will.”
Hammett went on to say that he could only recall eight of the 250 ideas he had recorded. Despite obviously being bothered about this, the Metallica axe slinger is trying to look on the bright side.
“I just chalked it down to, ‘Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be,’ and I’ll just move forward with it,” offered Hammett, who also advised fellow artists to make sure their work is backed up.
Despite all this, Metallica is still moving forward on what will be the band’s 10th album and first since 2008’s Death Magnetic. He describes what’s being worked on as “super-riffy, super-heavy,” and claims that vocalist/guitarist James Hetfield “is doing a lot of really, really cool melody stuff these days, a lot of vocal layers.”
