Kanye Says ‘Voices’ Told Him to Jump Grammy Stage
After being called a “twat” by Garbage frontwoman Shirley Manson, Kanye West appeared this morning on Ryan Seacrest’s radio program to explain his actions at Sunday night’s Grammy Awards.
During the conversation, West claimed that “voices in his head” encouraged him to go on stage during Beck’s Album of the Year award acceptance speech. West went on to say that the whole thing was meant to be funny and that he didn’t want to take attention away from Beck’s moment. (Editor’s note: uh huh.)
“Beck is one of the nicest guys and one of the most respected musicians in the game,” offered West. “There’s nothing that I will want to do as a fellow musician to disrespect him in any way.
“…Taylor Swift came up to me right afterwards, literally right afterwards, and tells me that I should have went on stage,” continued West. “This is the irony of my life.” (Editor’s note: West says that he and Swift plan to record together…heaven help us.)
What about the post-show rant on E! where he stated that Beck needed to respect artistry and hand over his Album of the Year Grammy? West said that he couldn’t resist giving his opinion when provided a platform, and having time to stew over the matter didn’t help his cause.
West said that he subsequently misworded his message during his E! rant and conceded: “Obviously Beck is one of the most respected artists, and respects artistry.” However, he still made it clear on a couple of occasions that Beyoncé should’ve won. (Editor’s note: big surprise.)
In almost an attempt to then find a silver lining in his behaviour, West called himself a musical “chiropractor,” capable of providing jolts of truth that benefit those involved in his controversial moments.
“I don’t feel like I have the right to take away from people’s moments, but the reality of it is…it’s just a little jolt of truth, right? Everyone feels better after the fact, or everyone is way more famous after the fact, or everyone sells way more albums after the fact, and then Kanye just goes on being an asshole to everyone.”
Crazy, but that’s how it goes.
