Iggy Pop Suggests “Post Pop Depression” is His Final Album
As exciting as it is to know that a new Iggy Pop album(Post Pop Depression) is coming out on March 18, it is tough to think that this might very well be the father of punk rock’s swan song.
During an interview with Beats1 radio interviewer Matt Wilkinson, Pop, 68, suggested that Post Pop Depression – the album he’s made with Queens of the Stone Age’s Josh Homme and Matt Helders of Arctic Monkeys – may be the last album he puts out.
“I feel like I’m closing up after this. That’s what I feel. It’s my gut instinct,” offered Pop. When asked if he meant he’ll never make music again, Pop elaborated: “No. If you call me and you want to work out a deal to come and sing ‘Happy Birthday’ at your mother’s, something like that I’ll refer you to someone. But to really make a real album you really have to put everything into it and the energy’s more limited now.”
While it is interesting that Pop has put such a notion out there, his winding down was seemingly hinted at by Homme during a Post Pop Depression interview with The New York Times in late January. There, Homme referred to this album as a “victory lap” for Pop.
“He is the last one of the one-of-a-kinds,” said Homme. “This is a much deserved victory lap for a man who’s not sure if he won. But he did. He may have tunneled underground for lots of that, but he still got to the destination.”
