Florence was “Spiraling” before Re-Launching The Machine

Last week, Florence + The Machine served notice that 2015 should be a big year for them, as it was florencerevealed that June 1 would be the release of the band’s hotly-anticipated third album, How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful.

However, in a new interview with BBC Radio 1, Florence Welch admitted that the path leading up to this album wasn’t a smooth one.

Cermonials (2011) and Lungs (2009) all blurred together, we didn’t take any time off. [There] was a decision to have a year off,” offered Welch.

She continued: “[I had] a bit of a nervous breakdown…It was a bit of a crash landing in a sense…In the year off, I was still going out and going to events but something wasn’t quite right, I was spiraling a bit. I wasn’t making myself happy. I wasn’t stable.”

As a result of the tough times, Welch does believe that she’s touched on new territory with album number three:

“It was a really vulnerable time for me when we first started making the record,” said Welch. “Because of that, it’s the most personal record I’ve ever made.”

In case you missed it, here’s Florence + The Machine’s new single, “What Kind of Man.”
