The Flaming Lips Weigh in on Kesha & Dr. Luke Allegations
When pop star Kesha recently alleged that she was the victim of emotional and sexual abuse at the hands of her producer Dr. Luke, the accused quickly fired back that Kesha’s claims – which were made in a lawsuit – were only uttered so that she could get out of her contract with him. He has since filed a countersuit.
In a new interview with Radio.com Wayne Coyne – whose band The Flaming Lips had hoped to release a collaborative project with Kesha before a stop sign was put up – offered his insight on the matter.
Admitting that he doesn’t really know the situation, or Dr. Luke personally, Coyne said that when he and Kesha speak, “there’s some anxiety” evident with regards to her relationship with the producer.
“I think she would like to have the freedom to do more things in that spirit. Where it’s not — again, I don’t know their situation — but where it’s not producers producing her,” offered Coyne. “She could produce herself, that’s probably what she is wanting to happen with her own career. I love Kesha, she’s great. Miley [Cyrus] is a lot more of her own entity. I think the success of Hannah Montana has allowed her to be the king of her own destiny. And I think Kesha will get to that eventually. She doesn’t have that sort of power now, but I think she will eventually.”
Coyne went on to say that after recording a number of songs with Kesha, he was reminded by the pop singer that they couldn’t see the light of day.
“The stuff that we did together [with Kesha] was just spectacular, and it made us want to do more,” added Coyne. “And I think we did like four or five songs, and then Kesha would remind me, ’Wayne, I can’t put this music out, Dr. Luke will kill me.’ I was like, ’Oh! I didn’t know!’”
