Dave Grohl Explains Foo Fighters Record Store Day 10”
One of the biggest highlights of Record Store Day 2015 (April 18) will be the release of Songs from the Laundry Room, a 10” featuring four tracks from Foo Fighters. On it, will be early versions of eventual first album tracks “Big Me” and “Alone + Easy Target,” as well as a cover of Kim Wilde’s “Kids in America,” and the never-before-heard Foos track, “Empty Handed.”
“There was a kid that lived not too far from me that had a four-track studio in the laundry room in his parents’ house, his name was Barrett Jones,” said Grohl in an interview with Rolling Stone, where it’s noted that these songs came to life when he was playing in punk bands in Virginia. “He was a couple years older than me. But he was the guy who bought the equipment and started figuring out how to record all of his friends’ bands. So the first time I ever recorded anything was with Barrett.”
Grohl went on to explain that when he moved to Seattle to join Nirvana, Barrett soon followed and the two got a place together.
“I had his eight-track studio in my basement at my house, and I would go downstairs every time I came home from tours and he and I would record songs,” recalled Grohl. “That’s how the Foo Fighters started, really.”
He added: “It was just something to do in between tours when I was playing with Nirvana. By the time Nirvana was over, I had, I don’t know, 20, 30, 40 of these recordings that no one had ever heard. There’s a lot more than just those [Laundry Room 10”] songs. I think the songs that we picked for the Record Store Day album were maybe picked out of 15 or 20 others that no one’s ever heard.”
Earlier this week it was revealed that Songs from the Laundry Room is already available on eBay for an inflated price. An inside source tells Riffyou.com that most of the Record Store Day 2015 releases haven’t been shipped yet, so the seller is likely “anticipating” that he/she will have certain titles in possession eventually.
