Coolio Wanted to Collaborate with Kurt Cobain

From an album output perspective, 1994 was a hell of a year for music fans – especially the rock crowd. Green Day gave us Coolio-2014Dookie; Oasis opened our eyes with Definitely Maybe; Weezer gave nerds hope with their Blue Album; while Nine Inch Nails really began to freak people out through the emergence of The Downward Spiral.

This was also the year that fresh-faced hip-hop artist, Coolio, gave us the head-bobbing beauty that was “Fantastic Voyage,” off of his debut album, It Takes a Thief.

Unfortunately, 1994 will also be remembered as the year that Kurt Cobain took his own life. While the aforementioned albums will forever be celebrated, none of them will ever be considered the most memorable, or important musical happening of 1994. The cloud of Cobain’s premature death will forever overshadow it all.

As part of SPIN’s reflection on the year that was, the magazine sat down with Coolio (who has recently aligned himself with PornHub Records) to get his thoughts on some of the year’s biggest songs and artists.

When the subject of Cobain’s passing came up, Coolio revealed his then desire to collaborate with the grunge icon, and also offered some interesting thoughts on drug use.

“I happened to be watching MTV and it came over the wire. And I was like, ‘Well, damn.’ I was mad at Kurt, like, ‘Why you gotta do that before I do a song with you?’ I was mad at his people. They didn’t see that shit coming? C’mon! Put the motherfucker on Thorazine; dose him up so he can stay alive,” said Coolio.

“You know, people who do drugs get so pressured by people who don’t that they get depressed. Society and their families make them feel like shit about their habits,” he continued. “A lot of times they’re not hurting nobody. They don’t go out and cause trouble. They don’t miss work. Fuck, man. Let that shit roll. I’ve had my ups and downs with that. I’m not on drugs right now, but I’m not gonna sit here and say I won’t ever do drugs. I’ll never do cocaine again… but I haven’t tried everything.”
