‘Canadify’ Your Music Choices with New Spotify App

A week after officially launching in Canada, popular music streaming service, Spotify, has introduced a new web app designed to sam-roberts-turf-6let you ‘Canadify’ your favourite international artists.

No, this does not mean that you can alter song lyrics and recordings to make Led Zeppelin sing about hockey games or toques.

What we are talking about here is the ability to type the name of an international artist into a search field, and within seconds be provided a visual list and audio samples of Canadian artists who have a similar aesthetic.

“Our goal with Spotify Canada is to integrate seamlessly with the listening needs of Canadians,” reads a statement issued by the company. “[The app] can lead to some interesting listening and certainly shows the range and depth of great music coming from Canada.”

For example, typing in ‘The Black Keys’ would bring forth results like Death From Above 1979, The Sheepdogs, Sam Roberts Band, and even Steppenwolf. Pearl Jam, of course, would lead you to acts like Nickelback and Theory of a Deadman.

The Echo Nest (which is a subsidiary of Spotify) analyzes the music of the typed-in artist to find Canadian ones that matchup.

Not bad, eh?
